Welcome to Class!

I love ceramic sculpture and working with clay. I hope to share my ongoing investigation of how to convey ideas through three dimensional form with you this fall. Be prepared to have fun and to work hard!

  1. I went to the SFMOMA a couple weeks ago and it was absolutely amazing. They had the Fisher collection, From Calder to Warhol. They have a billion dollar collection and have works from some of the best artists from the 1940s and on. It was great to see a Calder in person as well as Richard Serra, Chuck Close, Gerhard Richter and many more.

  2. I got the chance to visit AVAM (American Visionary Art Museum) in Baltimore while I was there for a conference. It was the second time I've been there, and really fantastic. It is pretty much all outsider art. Several of the current and permanent exhibitions had to do with race and politics. I love that museum because it's so quirky and non-traditional. I love seeing untrained artists express themselves through a self-taught craft... I find it really inspiring.

I also got to work in a short assistantship with one of my professors. We drove all around Jacksonville doing a videoshoot for a solo show she was having in upstate new york. I loved that experience because I got to know my professor/mentor on a more personal level as well as see what it can look like to be a professional, active artist while being a professor as well.

  3. Unfortunately this summer I had a full time job that prevented much of my usual art-related trips, but my experiences at work were rather interesting. Working for a microbiologist at the USDA allowed me to see lots of tiny organisms in so many natural/organic patterns and forms that I hope will help me with this first project!

  4. This summer I was in Gainesville taking some classes and I also held a job, so I really didn't see any shows or get to travel anywhere. I took a studio course this summer called Art and Activism and we ended that course by holding a show which was amazing. I am a drawing major so I am a fish out of water in this class, with very little prior knowledge about ceramics.

I did work at summer school at the Polk Museum of Art and I assisted in the ceramics class, which taught elementary and middle schoolers the basic hand building and glazing techniques.

  5. I was in Paris on a missions trip for five weeks this summer. I visited the Louvre and Musee D'Orsay. I saw lots of amazing paintings and sculptures, including one of my favorites the winged Niki. Unfortunately the Degas collection was on tour at D'Orsay but still loved seeing some of my other favs.
